Winter Olympics underway in Canada
It’s that time again. The 21st Winter Olympics are in action in Vancouver, Canada and once again athletes from around the world compete for glory and prestigious gold medals.
The Winter Olympics are a time when heroes arise and countries unite in fierce competition.
Currently The Star-Spangled Banner is the anthem heard ringing out from the medal stand the most. The United States, an Olympic powerhouse, is leading the medal count at the moment, with five gold medals, three silver, and 6 bronzes, for a total of 14 overall medals. Holding second place medal-wise is Germany with 10 medals, and the host country of Canada is in fourth with six medals.
As with every Olympics, certain athletes become Olympic stars, and icons for their home countries. For the 2010 games, some of the best and most-talked about athletes include Zhao Hongbo and Shen Xue of China, Lindsey Vonn of the United States, and Sidney Crosby of Canada.
With 10 more days of competition, there is many more precious medals just waiting to be awarded, and the standings are sure to change many times before the Closing Ceremonies. If the first few days are any indication, the Games of the 21st Olympiad are sure to be thrilling.
