With basketball season in full swing, the annual Mr. Panther royalty candidates have been announced. Seniors Sean Smith, Tyson Liston, Jake Wittkop, Cory Whited, Meshach Kennedy and Jameson Moore have been picked as this year’s potential Mr. Panther.

Mr. Panther is an annual fundraiser held by the Derby High School cheerleading squad. Students donate money into jars labeled with the candidates’ names and the senior with the most money wins.

“It’s a privilege to be nominated,” Kennedy said.

Many of the boys agreed with the sentiment.

“It feels like I’m somewhat important,” Smith said. “Like I’m the fifth Jonas brother or something.”

For Liston, Mr. Panther is something he’s known his entire life.

“It feels good to be apart of something I used to watch when I was a little kid,” Liston said.

The proceeds from Mr. Panther are raised for the cheerleading squad, while part of the money will also go toward Haiti relief. Students can donate money and “vote” for their candidate of choice Feb. 16-23. Mr. Panther will be announced Feb. 23 during halftime as Derby hosts the Maize Eagles.
