Last night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers gave out full complimentary meals to its costumers who obtained a special invitation. Thanks to employee Madison Baxter, I was able to take part in the event.

Aside from half of Derby’s residents being present, making the small building as crammed as possible, my experience overall was great.

Before entering the building, located on Rock Road in the north corner of the Derby Marketplace, I was greeted by one of the restaurant’s managers and handed a menu by an employee. While ordering, the cashiers were very welcoming and helpful in my life crisis of what I should order, making personal suggestions and references.

Surprisingly, my order of the No. 1 combo, Freddy’s original double, was ready quicker than I imagined. It was even fresh and warm; burger and fries. Usually I finish my drink before I finish the meal but this time was a little different. That double burger was too delicious to put down for a drink; my cup was full at the end of the meal.

Working at Kohl’s for only two months has caused me to constantly judge others customer service tactics and I can say Freddy’s employees rocked customer service. Even though they were not required to do so, employees were offering to deliver orders, pick up trash and help with anything else asked of them.

On top of that the official and original owner, Freddy Simon, was there to welcome customers. Simon was a very nice man who made sure to greet everyone who walked through the entrance doors, even stopping to have long conversations with some customers.

The restaurant was very clean and organized. It seemed as though there was a plan for everything; taking orders, making the orders, assisting in getting the customer their order — organization really made my visit more enjoyable.

Freddy’s is officially one of my favorite places, compared to other new restaurants in the area. Yeah, the prices are a bit higher than McDonald’s but it is a steakburger and one that is definitely worth the price. Freddy’s has been open since yesterday but today will be the official grand opening.

We just enjoyed our first meal at Freddie’s. What a welcome experience! I often opine that nobody knows how to make an old-fashioned hamburger, but that was before I stopped at Freddie’s in Topeka.

So many burger-makers hand you a half-pound of meat on a bun. Their presentation is lackluster and they automatically think everyone WANTS this pile of meatloaf. I truly believe that thinner patties make for a more delicious taste. If you want a thick burger, order a double or triple. Make it as thick as you want it, but leave the basic patty thin.

Also noticeable was the lack of grease in the air at Freddie’s. We stayed there for a full 30 minutes and walked out without a hint of grease on our clothing. Five Guys should take lessons from Freddie’s.
