Restaurant/beverage review

I like to consider myself a true coffee drinker. Instead of focusing just on Starbucks weekly specials, I hunt out coffee. I like to find new beans, new flavors, new roasts; anything that will truly arouse my taste buds. I’ve had a few good cups of Joe in my day but nowhere has earned my respect more than Fresh Roast Coffee Company.

Started by local businessman Tim Wiesner, Fresh Roast has been roasting especially fresh, exquisite coffee beans for nearly six years. But as of this previous November, they have officially opened their doors to a full espresso bar in a small shop on Douglas St.

Featuring individual cups of coffee, lattes, mochas, non-caffeinated drinks and more, Fresh Roast Coffee Company is exactly what owner Wiesner describes it – “small, but tiny.” Fresh Roast, located at #2 N. Clifton, is only 250 sq feet, but hosts a cozy indoor sitting space. When you first walk in, you can’t help but notice the antique German roaster, which is the pride and joy of Fresh Roast.

Fresh Roast also features a multitude of coffee beans from across the globe. Wiesner cuts out the middle man and orders directly from the farmers in Columbia, El Salvador, Mexico, Sumatra, and many other places. Many of the coffee beans he orders are also organic; most are available in decaf. Fresh Roast creates their own espresso-blend in-store in order to create the perfect cup of coffee every single time.

Individual cups of coffee can be bought, along with pounds or half-pounds of coffee beans, (ground or whole). The wait may be a little longer than it would be at Starbucks, but that’s because every individual cup is brewed especially when asked, ensuring every ounce of freshness possible.

I dare someone to find another coffee shop as welcoming, enjoyable, and delicious as Fresh Roast. Wiesner gets to know every customer and has a steady following of regulars already – including me. I find myself coming back to Fresh Roast time and time again because it has everything a good, well-owned business should: a welcoming atmosphere, a near-perfect product, and friendly customer service.

Fresh Roast’s current hours are 8 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday. Their new summer hours, 7 am to 11 am, begin June 1. If you decide to stop by, (the little shack is on the NE corner of Clifton Square, on Clifton street), tell them Courtney sent you. And be ready for a taste bud explosion.

For more information on Fresh Roast Coffee Company, you can visit their website at www.freshroastcoffeecompany.com, join the Facebook group here, or follow them on Twitter at www.twitter.com/coffeeroastery.

Derby Panther yearbook has officially arrived in K-11. This year’s yearbook is the first yearbook in recent history to be distributed during the spring. Instead of a fall distribution date, yearbooks will be distributed this week, with supplemental pages mailed out in August.

“I think this is better,” senior Kyle Tormey said. “This way we don’t have to wait.”

Senior yearbooks will be distributed at High Park at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Yearbooks for remaining students will be distributed beginning Friday before and after school and will continue throughout next week.

Another plus with spring yearbooks is the opportunity for students to sign each other’s yearbooks. A yearbook signing event is scheduled for the seniors at the same time on Thursday afternoon.

“It looks like it’s more organized,” junior Skylar Nicholson said. “It’s nice to get them before next year.”

Yearbooks can still be purchased for $55. They are first come, first serve. For more information on the yearbooks, please visit K-11.

Police officers, teachers, and administration are looking for the unknown suspects that broke into school sometime around three this morning.

Rooms K11 the journalism room, Q-16 the Parenting classroom, all foods rooms from Q-12-Q-14, and Physical Education meeting room G-36 were all broken into last night and early morning.

There was a report that G-36 was broken into sometime around 7 yesterday evening.

“This makes me feel funny and violated,” Q-16 parenting teacher Penny Christensen said.

As of today at 10:45 a.m. the electronics reported stolen are MAC computers from the journalism room, along with Lindsay Porter’s laptop, down in Q-hall Marsha Slack’s laptop was stolen, Christensen’s personal photo printer was stolen, and her projector was attempted to be stolen but the theif couldn’t get it out of the ceiling tile.

“This is a big inconvience,” Christensen said. “I was going to show a film on child safety today and have them watch their preschool video.”

Porter’s class had to be moved to room K-12, while the glass was cleaned up. All three windows entering the room, and Porter’s office window was broken into. K-11 was the most damaged room of all rooms that were broken into.

“It’s inconvient and disruptful,” Porter said “ It adds stress to an already busy week.”

While the police, and administration are still investigating the situation.

If you have any information contact CrimeStoppers and it could be a reward of up to $1,000.

Movie review

Tom Six’s the Human Centipede is a horror movie that has been circulating through film festivals is just recently been put through a wider U.S. distribution with limited theater releases. The plot follows Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser) as he attempts to combine three people into a single organism.

While the movie can be graphic at times, I found that if anything made me queezy it was the idea of what was happening to the victims. Anything visual was often tame and tastefully done. Anyone who watches will find it about as graphic as an episode of House. The did not rely on on jump scares or overly gory scenes as can seen in Drag Me to Hell or the Saw franchise. It was actually a pretty gripping story and was really easy to follow for the most part. The doctor was the best actor in the whole movie and everything was usually kept within the limits of reality.

There were however, a lot of typical horror movie mistakes to be found throughout the film. The female victims were all in all bad actors. Their voices and moods were quite inconsistent whenever they tried to express strong emotion and while it was not absolutely terrible, I did find the movie more enjoyable when they couldn’t talk anymore. The japanese man seemed to have a big bag of not only cliched, but sometimes odd lines that could more or less be heard in any horror movie under the B rating. There are at least three scenes where I found myself thinking “Why are they doing that?”

While I would not call this an amazing movie or a must see, it was a good movie and most who appreciate the horror genre should find this movie worthy of viewing.

Movie review

Traditionally when a person passes away the family and friends of the individual hold a ceremony to remember the life and legacy of that person. But what happens when the body in the casket is not the person you intended to mourn?

Actors Martin Lawrence and Chris Tucker star as brothers who are preparing to say their last goodbyes to their father. Upon arriving to the funeral Tucker notices that his father’s body is not in the casket. It is another descended man that the funeral service had brought by mistake.

When the father’s friend Frank (Peter Dinklage) shows up many eye brows are risen. Nobody has ever met this man before or knows how he knew Lawrence and Tucker’s father. Frank has many secrets about the father that he will reveal unless he receives a large amount of cash.

There are many twists and turns that happen throughout this movie but they are somewhat predictable. If you focus on the story line of this movie it can be easily seen what will happen next but the comedy can not be beaten.

Although I found this movie hilarious, overall it was too predictable and I could have waited to watch it on DVD.

Arizona’s recent immigration law has proven to be highly controversial nation-wide. Proponents believe it will help Arizona deal with illegal immigration while opponents think it will lead to racial profiling . Both sides have set up websites and rallies. The law makes being in the United States illegally a state crime and gives police officers the right to question anyone’s immigration status and demand that persons documents if they have reason to believe that person is not in the United States legally.

Since the law was first created, there have been a few modifications made to it. Now, officers are prohibited from questioning people based solely on their race. They must have another valid legal reason to question the person. The law has not gone into effect as of yet, and will go into effect on July 29 unless it is blocked by some court of law. In addition, several groups including the ACLU and individual citizens have filed law suits , claiming the law it is unconstitutional.

Across the country, people have strong opinions on the law. Boycotts against the state of Arizona have already gone into effect in certain cities, including Los Angeles and Seattle. In addition, individual groups and sports teams have been boycotting Arizona.

The law is sure to face much debate in the coming months. The U.S. District Court will be ruling on various cases about the law over the next few weeks, and the rulings will decide the future of the law .

Wichita State University may be eliminating Physics as both a department and a major. Provost Gary Miller proposed this to president Don Beggs due to lack of interest in past years. Few students have been entering the department and even fewer graduating with a degree in Physics.

In such an aviation-oriented town, most students enter engineering instead. While this is true however, many engineers and graduating students said they would not have even bothered applying to WSU if it did not have a Physics department previously.

Senior Cameron Gibson, receiving a full ride scholarship, said that he was very angry when he received a letter in the mail stating that there may not be a Physics major for him in the fall.

“If the department is gone then I will just go to another school for physics,” Gibson said.

Senior James Dean said he found himself very frustrated to hear the news.

“I will probably stay to finish my general education,” Dean said. “I will switch majors unless I am still interested in Physics, then I will switch schools.”

Whether the department will remain or not has yet to be decided as voices ring out from opposing sides. WSU is in need of budget cuts but many said that the damage to their reputation would be too great.

When thinking of popular places to hold major events, Kansas City doesn’t always rank very high on lists. Many people would not automatically associate Kansas City with a major metropolitan city capable of holding such events, even though the city has the space and capacity. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, however, is soon going to go put that doubt behind; according to insiders, Kansas City is supposed to be announced to host the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Venues and dates decided for upcoming major league All Star Games

This would be Kansas City’s first major sporting event since it hosted the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four in 1988. Considering the often modest market in the Kansas-Missouri area, the idea that nearly 100 million people will be watching Kauffman Stadium, (not including the mass exodus that will surely conquer the K’s parking lot), is difficult to imagine.

But Kansas City would surely profit from it. And estimated 25,000 media representatives, tens of thousands of people, and even baseball’s biggest stars will be coming to Kansas’s neck of the woods. The Chamber of Commerce will surely appreciate that incoming revenue from a temporary, but large, increase in population. It’ll be the biggest celebration of barbeque and Joakim Soria conversation the city has seen in years.

Hosting the 2012 All Star Game won’t come without its complications, however. Arranging a game of this magnitude means the city will be on paranoia mode; fixing up the city, perfecting the look of Kauffman Stadium, and security measures are only a few of the potential obstacles city officials and Royals representatives will have to overcome before thousands congregate Kansas City.

That doesn’t mean, however, that the excitement won’t overtake the problems. Kevin Uhlich, a Royals representative in charge of All Star Game plans, has high hopes for the game’s impact on Kansas City. Considering the last major league All Star Game held in Kansas City was in 1973, having it return to Kauffman Stadium could mean big things – for the Royals and for the entire city.

“We can’t wait,” Uhlich said. “We’re not on that national level all that often. We want to show people what we have to offer.”

This year, the All Star Game is being held at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. The 2011 All Star Game is tentatively scheduled for Phoenix at the home of the Diamondbacks. Commissioner Selig is expected to uphold the 2011 decision regardless of Arizona immigration legislative. The Kansas City Royals beat out the Boston Red Sox for the 2012 bid.

TV Program Review

Personally, I have been a fan of One Tree Hill for several years, and have seen nearly every episode. Next Monday is the seventh season finale, and the possibility of an eighth season seems shaky at best.

Over the last few seasons, One Tree Hill has undergone major changes, including losing two of the main characters Peyton and Lucas, and the addition of many new people, and a shortened fifth season due to a writer’s strike. Also, there have been time leaps between the different seasons. Currently, the show is receiving average ratings. Overall, I think season seven began as mediocre and has improved with every episode.

At the beginning of season seven, I will admit I had many doubts about the show. Season seven was the first season without former main characters Lucas and Peyton. However, the show handled the situation well, adding new characters to fill the void. When the season first began, I truly didn’t particularly care for the new characters, but by the mid-season point I got used to the new people and now feel that they add to the show and have genuinely come to like the characters.

In addition, certain storylines are not exactly original. Recently, the show has featured a crazy girl named Katie who is obsessed with one of the main characters Clay, which is vastly reminiscent of Carrie, the psycho nanny from season five. In addition, depression is a reoccurring story line for different characters throughout this season.

The possibility of an eighth season is in doubt. The show is one of the two CW programs still waiting for a possible renewal, and star Sophia Bush has already filmed a pilot for a new show she would star in next year in the case One Tree Hill is not renewed. Fans will know for sure if there will be an eight season when the CW unveils its fall schedule on May 20.
